The new Samsung U900 Soul

If you like the LG KF600 cell phone, there's a chance you will also like the new Samsung Ultra Edition. Announced and highly advertised during the Mobile World Congress Expo the U900 Soul cell phone is supposed to be Samsung's flagship phone for 2008 and to "continue the success of past Ultra Edition handsets, such as Samsung D900 and U600" as stated by the company's spokespersons. If it is not obvious, the name Soul is an abbreviation for the "Spirit of Ultra".

In what concerns the design, Samsung has only made small changes compared to the U600 model, the Soul's predecessor. The new slider phone seems to be a little bit bigger with a more masculine touch, and that's about it.

The U900 does bring some changes technology-wise. The most important one is the new Magic Touch, a display system that is capable of morphing the user interface. This means the icons change according to the application that is being used. It is this display system that reminds us of the LG KF600 model. Of course this is no more than a resemblance, as the LG InteractPad and the Samsung Magic Touch work in different ways. The InteractPad area has the same width as the main screen and in addition to the d-pad functionality it also carries the soft and the send/end keys. Whilst the LG's Magic Touch is about two thirds of the main screen's size and does not show the soft keys and send/end keys which are regular ones. On the Soul model, the touch screen is used mainly as a D-pad and it only morphs if you use the camera, the media player or the calculator.

The Soul cell phone features 7.2 Mbps High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) which is now the fastest possible. Unfortunately the quad band Soul cell phone is only UMTS 2100 MHz so the HSDPA cannot be used in the United States.

Moreover, the new U900 packs a 5 mega pixel camera, a 2.2 inch main TFT display with 16 million color support, an SD card slot and an FM radio.
