Xperia 1 - Three Firsts for Sony Ericsson
Xperia 1
Although the Sony Ericsson website mentioned 2009 as the release date for Xperia 1, the new QWERTY cell phone is already here.
The Mobile World Congress was opened by Sony Ericsson who unveiled their latest product, the Xperia, a cell phone that brings four firsts for the Japanese-Swedish joint venture. Xperia 1 is the first out of a series of cell phones that will focus on multimedia and mobile web communication. It is the first full QWERTY SE phone, the first true SE touch screen and the first SE device to use Windows Mobile as an operating system. Actually the Xperia 1 uses both Windows Mobile 6 and a custom interface of "XPERIA panels" which replaces the default Microsoft front-end. The user must only tap the panels with a finger to access calling, media and so on, which is as handy and simple as it gets.
This first Xperia phone includes an optical joystick and physical 4-way navigation key as well as a quite interesting arc-sliding QWERTY keyboard that tilts outward to make typing more comfortable.
Here's another sort of first for the Xperia 1: It is the most Internet connected SE device, as it offers HSUPA (High Speed Upload Packet Access), which is able to send media as quickly as it comes downstream. Also another premiere: Sony Ericsson has given its favorite Memory Stick Micro card slot in favor of a microSD one. As any other Smartphone, the quad-band Xperia packs a Wi-Fi, a GPS system and a 3.2-mega-pixel camera with auto focus.
Dominated by its 3-inch, 800x480 touch screen, the device has an elegant design and a sleek finish. In spite of its size, 110 x 53 x 16.7-mm, it could become the ladies' next favorite fashion phone. The first Xperia cell phone will be available in Q2 2008. No price has been mentioned yet, but it will be available in both Europe and North America.
